Even among 300 SLs, there are examples that stand out from their rarified peers. This 1955 300 SL is one of the best of the best, still retaining its original engine and alloy body that it left the factory with. The alloy-bodied 300 SLs were produced for privateer racers, and came with a special 3-liter NSL inline-six making 215 horsepower and weighing over 200 pounds less than the steel-bodied version. The suspension was retuned for high-speed stability, and just 29 were produced between 1955 and 1956. The car was delivered new to Casablanca, Morocco, before being imported into the US shortly afterward. The car was restored in the mid-’70s, passing to the president of the Mercedes Club of America in the ’80s, where it was driven regularly expertly maintained. With its originality and excellent condition, this 300 SL would be the crown jewel in any collection.
