New Releases Scotch Whisky Single Malt Scotch Whisky/Whiskey

Glen Moray Sauternes Cask Matured Review

In November I was invited to take part in a virtual tasting session with Dr Kristie McCallum and Iain Allan, along with some other folks, on the wonder that is Zoom! Welcome to 2020!

We were tasting together the new Glen Moray Sauternes Cask, that has been maturing for the last 14 years in Warehouse 1. An exciting expression that I was very keen to try.

So, let’s dive in!

First off, I couldn’t help but notice the colour of the whisky as I poured it into my glass. A dark amber bronze, it was almost warming to look at, as if you were sat by the fire on a winter’s day.

As I began to sip this whisky, I realised just how special it was. Each sip gave me more to think about. And the conclusion I came to by the end, was that this could quite honestly be the best dram I’ve had in 2020 so far!… And let me just say… there’s been a lot of drams this year! #lockdown

On the nose I was getting hints of sweet spice, cream and oranges. With rich oak notes at the end, preparing you nicely for what was to come.

The taste, if I had to describe it in 3 words, I’d say – smooth, complex and powerful. Thankfully, I don’t need to describe it in 3 words, as there’s a lot more to say! It was a magnificent mouthful, thick and oily, with chocolate coffee notes. Sweet and spiced on the palate, with dry fruits and vanilla. Rich and incredibly satisfying!

It had a very long and warm finish! Creamy and smooth, with more hints of spice. I can confirm, it is official – best dram I’ve had this year.

So, in summary, if you couldn’t guess, I thoroughly enjoyed this Sauternes Cask whisky from Glen Moray. It was complex and beautiful. Would highly recommend getting your hands on a bottle.
