The Mercedes G-Class has gone from a spartan military vehicle to must-have ultra-luxury cruiser over its 40-plus years. But now the iconic SUV is getting back to its roots with the G-Class W464, a stripped-down version built for emergency rescue and special operations. The bare trim level means it can be loaded with aftermarket equipment for nearly any job, while improvements in engine cooling and corrosion protection make it even more reliable in harsh operating environs. Power comes from a 3-liter turbo-diesel inline-six backed by an automatic transmission, driving heavy-duty portal axles at each wheel. A 24-volt electric system is standard, along with LED lights and a snorkel air intake.
