BLACK QUAIL HOUSE

Located on a rocky hillside in New Zealand, the Black Quail House finds inspiration in the area’s historic vernacular. The home is burrowed into the jagged landscape similar to the stone miner’s huts settled into the nearby valley. Its concrete and weathered steel facade blends into the terrain, while glazing on the rear elevation opens the contemporary interior to views over the river and the family’s vineyard. Sliding glass doors extend the polished concrete floors out to a series of outdoor courtyards, sheltered from the winds and immersed in the dramatic scenery.
