Buffalo Trace Distillery has introduced the second edition of its Prohibition Collection, an annual limited-edition set featuring five bottles that commemorate the whiskeys legally produced and sold at the Distillery during the Prohibition era. This collection pays tribute to brands crafted under the leadership of President Albert B. Blanton when the Distillery was known as George T. Stagg Distillery. The second release includes: Mirror Brook, Very Oldest Procurable (V.O.P.), Anderson’s Belle, Old Fashioned Mountain Corn, and Silver Wedding Rye Whiskey.
During Prohibition (1920–1933), the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol were banned due to the 18th Amendment. Alcohol could only be purchased legally with a medical prescription, and only six distilleries, including Buffalo Trace, were licensed to bottle medicinal whiskey.
Documents from the Distillery’s archives inspired this year’s Prohibition Collection, with each whiskey drawing on the original packaging of its historic counterpart:
- Mirror Brook: A 100-proof, bottled-in-bond blend of Kentucky Straight Whiskeys. It delivers a ripe cherry aroma, layered vanilla creaminess, and a foundation of mellow oak, chocolate, and rye spice.
- Very Oldest Procurable (V.O.P.): This barrel-proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon is uncut and unfiltered, boasting rye spice, toasted oak, vanilla, rich cherry notes, and a warm finish of oak, rye spice, and honey.
- Anderson’s Belle: A 100-proof, bottled-in-bond wheated bourbon with caramel, maple, and vanilla on the nose. Its flavor features robust oak and dried fruit undertones balanced by a sweet wheat character.
- Old Fashioned Mountain Corn: A 110-proof Kentucky Straight Corn Whiskey showcasing sweet corn intertwined with toasted oak and rich caramel, leading to a warm, lingering finish.
- Silver Wedding Rye Whiskey: A 125-proof Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey with notes of vanilla, toffee sweetness, leather, toasted oak, and rye spice, concluding with a persistent finish.
“As the oldest continuously operating distillery in America, Buffalo Trace carries a legacy shaped by pioneers like Albert B. Blanton,” said Harlen Wheatley, Master Distiller. “This collection honors that history and our commitment to exceptional whiskey.”
The collection includes five 375ml bottles, housed in a custom wooden display case inspired by Prohibition-era packaging. Each bottle features historically accurate details, including cut-outs for medicinal whiskey prescriptions.
In collaboration with the Scandinavian Tobacco Group, Buffalo Trace is also launching a limited-edition cigar set mirroring the Prohibition Collection. The set features five unique blends and will be available starting January 15, 2025.
The Prohibition Collection #2 will be available in limited quantities through select retailers, bars, and restaurants across the U.S. beginning January 2025. The suggested retail price for the collection is $999.99, with state taxes varying by market.
