LAHAO STONE HOUSES

Once described as the most beautiful town in China, the ancient village of Fenghuang is built on a mountain and dotted with stone houses. As part of the China Foundation For Poverty Alleviation’s Bona Villa project, United Practice Architects is reviving 12 properties in the north area. The studio has currently restored six of the Lahao Stone Houses with respect for the traditional craftsmanship and minimal damage to the site. The homestay’s original stone walls have been rebuilt per the traditional dry-laying method and feature raised roofs and a steel structure system. Internally, expansive windows frame in views of the old-growth trees and mountains, while warm wood covers the floors and fresh white walls create a tranquil atmosphere. The dwellings are connected by a stone pathway, allowing visitors to experience the scenery from varying viewpoints as they explore the area.
